Can you dream about your soulmate before you meet?

Yes, people do dream about a romantic partner they have never met, and many describe that person as strangely familiar. There is no evidence that such a dream predicts a real future partner. It can still tell you something true about what you long for.

Is it common to dream about someone you have never met?

Very. In the Hall and Van de Castle norms, a standard reference set in dream research, about half of the characters in dreams are unfamiliar to the dreamer. A stranger turning up in a dream is ordinary, and a stranger turning up as a partner is one of the forms that takes.

You may have read that the brain cannot invent a face and only replays faces you have already seen. It is a popular claim, but we could not find research that establishes it.

Why can a stranger in a dream feel so familiar?

Dreams carry feeling more strongly than detail. In a dream you often simply know who someone is, or what they are to you, without being shown why. That sense of knowing is part of the dream itself, which is why a face you have never seen can feel like home.

There are two broad ways to read it. Many spiritual traditions hold that two people can meet in dreams before they meet in life. An older psychological reading comes from Carl Jung, who wrote about the anima and animus, inner feminine and masculine figures that he believed appear in dreams and shape who we are drawn to. On that reading, the stranger is a picture of something in you.

You do not have to choose. Either way, the dream is worth paying attention to.

Five soulmate dreams people describe

1. The partner with no face

You feel loved and safe, but you never see the face, or it stays blurred. A down to earth reading is that you want the feeling of partnership and have no fixed idea of who brings it. A spiritual reading is that the time to know has not come.

2. The stranger who feels like home

You have never seen this person, yet in the dream you have known them for years. This is the dream many people call a soulmate dream. Notice how they treated you in it, because that is usually the part that stays.

3. The same person, again and again

A recurring figure can feel like a message. It can also reflect a wish that keeps returning because nothing in waking life has answered it yet.

4. A wedding or a shared home

You are marrying or living with someone unknown. These dreams tend to be less about the person and more about commitment: whether you feel ready for it, hopeful about it or wary of it.

5. A name, an initial or a place

Some people wake with a name or a location and nothing else. It is tempting to treat this as a clue to follow. Hold it lightly. A name in a dream is not evidence about a real person.

How can you see your soulmate in your dreams?

There is no reliable way to make a particular person appear in a dream. What you can do is go to sleep with a question in mind, a practice dream researchers call dream incubation. In a 1993 study by psychologist Deirdre Barrett, 76 students focused on a problem of their choice each night for a week, and about half recalled a dream they judged related to it.

To try it, write one question before bed and read it as you fall asleep. Keep it about the relationship and not a face, for example “What kind of love am I ready for?” Then write down whatever you remember in the morning. You may dream about the theme. Do not expect a portrait.

What should you write down after a soulmate dream?

Dream detail fades quickly, so keep a notebook by the bed and write before you check your phone.

  • How you felt with this person, in one or two words.
  • What they did and how they treated you.
  • Where you were and what was happening around you.
  • Anything said, including names or places.
  • What is going on in your life right now that the dream may be answering.

Leave the face alone if it was not clear. Filling it in afterwards changes the memory.

Can a dream tell you who your soulmate is, or when you will meet?

No. A dream cannot give you a name, a date or a guarantee, and it is not a reason to put your life on hold or to treat a stranger who resembles the dream as someone you are meant to pursue.

Dreams are also one of the signs people describe before a soulmate arrives. What a dream can do is show you what you want from love. That is useful on its own, and it pairs well with practical steps. Our guide on how to manifest your soulmate without a specific person in mind turns that feeling into something you can act on.

Another way to picture them

If a dream left you with a feeling but no face, a soulmate sketch gives you a portrait to look at. Ours comes with a written Soulmate Story and is made from the answers you give about yourself. Like a dream, it is for reflection and enjoyment, not a prediction.

Where does this question come up?

People compare these dreams in dream communities all the time. Two Reddit threads in r/Dreams show the range: Has anyone ever dreamed of their soulmate? and Anybody else ever dreamt of their soulmate? Accounts like these are personal experiences, not proof that a dream came true.

Quick answers

Soulmate dream questions

Can you dream of your soulmate before meeting them?

People often dream of a partner they have not met, and about half of all dream characters are strangers to the dreamer. There is no evidence that such a dream predicts a real future partner.

Why can I not see my soulmate’s face in my dream?

Dreams carry feeling more strongly than detail, so a partner without a clear face is common. It may reflect wanting the feeling of partnership without a fixed idea of who brings it.

Does dreaming about someone mean they are thinking of you?

There is no evidence for that. A dream comes from your own mind, so it says more about your thoughts and wishes than about another person’s.

What does it mean if I keep dreaming about the same stranger?

Some people read a recurring figure as a spiritual sign. It can also reflect a wish that keeps returning. Write down how the person treats you in the dream, because that often shows what you are looking for.

How can I dream about my soulmate?

You cannot choose who appears in a dream, but you can go to sleep with a question in mind, which researchers call dream incubation. In a 1993 study, about half of the students who tried it for a week recalled a dream related to their chosen problem.
