What does research say about who people end up with?

Studies of real couples cannot describe your partner, but they do show three patterns worth knowing.

• Partners tend to be alike. A 2023 study in Nature Human Behaviour pooled 199 earlier studies and data on nearly 80,000 couples. Partners were more likely than not to be similar on 82% to 89% of the traits analyzed, most strongly on political and religious attitudes and education.

• Your type predicts less than you think. In a 2008 speed dating study, what people said they wanted in a partner did not predict who they were actually drawn to in person.

Put together, the most likely answer is an ordinary one. Your partner will probably share much of your background and values, may even look a little like you, and may not match the type you carry in your head.

Appearance or relationship qualities: which matters more?

A face helps you imagine someone. It does not tell you how they will treat you. The qualities that decide whether a relationship lasts are ones you can only see over time: steady care, honest communication, mutual interest and shared goals.
